May is Water Safety Month, and at British Swim School, water safety is our number one priority. While teaching children to swim is an important step toward water safety, experts recommend implementing several layers of protection at all times. These layers of protection include active supervision, physical barriers, alarms, and other safety measures to help prevent drowning incidents and keep everyone safer around the water.
The risk of drowning exists wherever there is water, making water safety especially prevalent for children. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children, particularly between the ages of 1-4. While drowning risks vary by age group, no one is “drown proof” – even adults and experienced swimmers can get into trouble in the water!
Drowning is often silent and can go unnoticed even within a few feet of a crowd of people. Did you know a person can drown in less than 60 seconds if not noticed? Did you know a person can drown in less than 2 inches of water? These facts make it important to monitor children even around small bodies of water such as a bathtub or wading pool.
Swimming lessons add a layer of water safety and can help prevent drowning incidents. By being aware of the risks and taking precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones from the dangers of drowning
